Tympanum

Our Tympanum drum is inspired by a 2nd Century BCA Roman mosaic depicting an ancient Greek street musician, a Bacchus/Dionysius figure. Our single headed, tunable manifestation of this instrument resonates with ancient mysteries and rituals, both sacred and profane. This is a 16″ diameter x 2.75″ deep (about 40 cm x 7 cm) drum, crafted of cherry wood and stained  green with red edges. The head is with goatskin, dyed red. The drum is embellished with 5 knotted cords that, when swung rhythmically, strike the head both inside and outside the frame.

Your drum is made to order in our Vermont workshop, built one at a time for the artist who will play it. Current delivery time averages 6–8 weeks.
